Problem Based Learning (PBL)

Problem-based learning (PBL) is a method of learning and teaching which allows students to focus on how and what they will learn. An unfamiliar problem, situation or task is presented to the students (by the lecturer or tutor) and students are required to determine for themselves how they will go about solving the problem. This usually occurs through small group work and allows students to utilise their prior knowledge in the topic area and identify the gaps in their knowledge as they attempt to solve the problem.

*sorry can't find a better reference, so here's my version👇

Problem Based Learning (PBL) is obviously defined by itself. A type of learning that occurs by solving a problem.

The problem is presented in the form of HOTS question (why, how, what ways,etc... reasoning, suggestions..)

The question requires pupils to apply their knowledge and bring in their experiences. A question can be based on a particular topic or several units.

Things to consider before presenting/choosing a problem đź‘€:
How much have the pupils mastered the topic (s) they have learned?
How much exposure do these pupils have on the topics required for the problem?
What are the sources of reference for the pupils to get the information they need?

All the questions above tell us the PBL can also be a discovery learning in which the pupils will apply their prior knowledge together with the new information form a new understanding or deepen what they already know.

In order to solve the problem, some strategies are necessary to guide the pupils - cooperative strategies (think pair and share, corners, fan n pick,3 stray 1 stay, gallery walk. Two heads are better than one. Or maybe more!)
* i-Think maps can be used to help pupils to brainstorm their ideas, make comparisons, consider the cause and effect, etc

đź‘‹How is it run?
1.  The problem is presented. Teacher may want to brainstorm on the definition or breakdown the sentences to find the required information.
2. Pupils discuss in their groups with cooperative strategies implied.
3. The outcomes of the discussion can be presented through presentations, gallery walk ,etc.

🎉Make it fun!
- Make the problem like a case to solve.
- Each group member can wear journalist tags when they do 3 stray 1 stay because they are going to get new information from other groups.
- Bring in magnifying glass, light bulb to stimulate their interest.

đź“—Resources
- pictures, internet access (tablet, chromebook, ipad, pc), books, pamphlets,

Example of problem based learning activities:
- Discuss ways to curb the increasing rate of  road accidents.
- Aminah wants to help her mother who has been supporting the family. However she can't work part time because she needs to concentrate on her studies. How can she help her mother?. ( limitation is given).

21st century learning skills: collaborative, communicative, creative, critical (perfect!)

That's about it. A problem to solve. Pupils share their expertise, develop researching skills while reinforcing their collaborative skills.

  1. Post yg menarik tuan. PBL juga adalah antara cara untuk menyampaikan maklumat kepada pelajar dlm STEAM (Science, Teachnology, Engineering, Art dan Maths).

  2. Betul, juga dikenali sebagai Project Based Learning. Maklumat disampaikan kerana murid mencari maklumat untuk menyelesaikan masalah dengan itu, mereka menjadi independen.
